Students performing an Archaeology 4 Schools excavation

Archaeology 4 Schools (A4S) specializes in using curriculum frameworks to teach public and independent school students the essentials of archaeology and the work that archaeologists do.

Archaeology 4 Schools offers an in-school
Presentation, Workshop, and/or Excavation Program

We love to visit Summer Programs and Camps, too!

The program, workshop, and excavation experience were developed in accordance with the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for History and Social Science, Grade 4 Content Standards. Topics covered include how archaeologists develop theories about ancient migrations, as well as exploring evidence of early North American populations; identifying archaeological evidence of major civilizations; how archaeologists conduct research; and examples of Native American archaeological sites in North America. While the content was created with 4th grade standards in mind, it is appropriate for Grade 5 as well.

Mr. Kotkin really has a grasp of the subject and is able to impart his knowledge to kids on their level, even those who have never had exposure to archaeology before.

The presentation was a great way for us to cover the state standards—none of our teachers have experience in archaeology!

The students came away with a good understanding of how archaeologists use clues to answer important questions about Native American migration, sites, and cultures.

Our classes loved the presentation, and they talked about the hands-on workshop for weeks afterward.
